Southend's Children and Families Information PointSHIP Adults
There are many seasonal activities and playschemes that run over the school holidays for children, young people and families. Some playschemes allow children to be left for a period of time and can be used as childcare for working parents.

Other Holiday Clubs and events are intended as fun activities for children but can help bridge gaps in childcare arrangements. Please discuss details with the provider as parents may be expected to stay with children for some events. Please also make yourself aware of the Safeguarding section below when using non-registered settings.

Issues to Consider

  • Will your child be able to cope in a large group? Perhaps a childminder would be a better option for them.
  • Some holiday playschemes are very popular and you may need to book your child’s place well in advance.
  • Would your child enjoy the structure of a holiday playscheme?
  • Check the registration status of provision you choose for your child and, where applicable, ask to see their Ofsted registration certificate or CRB/DBS certificate and qualifications.

If you are hoping to claim help towards the cost of childcare you may wish to consider this prior to using a provider as in many cases only registered childcare qualifies.

Registration is required by Ofsted [Office for Standards in Education]when Out of school services cater for children under the age 8 years and are open for more than two hours a day.

Registration with Ofsted is not required for services that solely offer select activities, such as sports or performing arts. This type of provision, and those services that cater for children over the age of 8, are able to apply for inclusion on Ofsted’s Voluntary Register. More information about registration requirements can be found in the Ofsted Early Years and Childcare Registration Handbook (pdf)

Childcare provided by a school may also be eligible for the Childcare Element of Working Tax Credits providing the care is run by the school itself (not a private company using the premise), outside of school hours, on the school’s premises and the school have declared this with Ofsted. If unsure please discuss with the school.

Registered Childminders

Registered childminders can provide flexible childcare arrangements and are ideal for parents that work long or irregular hours. Many childminders are open during the school holidays and can care for older siblings as well.
