Southend's Children and Families Information PointSHIP Adults

Southend Information, Advice and Support Service (SENDIASS)

We provide a free, impartial and confidential service to parents and carers of children who have special educational needs and or a disability. (SEND)

The SENDIAS Service aims to encourage partnership between parents, carers and young people with their school, local authority, social care, health and other agencies. Our intention is to provide information to enable you to make your own informed choices.

SENDIASS also provides direct support to children and young people up to 25 years of age. We can work directly with the child or young person, or work with them and their parent or carer.

What support do we offer?

We offer accurate, up to date and impartial resources and information about the law on special educational needs and disability.

This covers:

  • Education, Health and Social Care
  • National and Local Policy
  • The Local Offer
  • Yours and your child's rights and choices
  • Opportunities to participate in decisions regarding your, or your child’s education
  • Where you can find help and advice
  • How you can access support

We may provide information in many ways, including publications, at training events or conferences.

Sometimes, information alone is not enough. You may want help to understand and gather information, make sense of it and apply it to your own situation. We call this 'advice' and we offer this service by email, on the telephone, face to face and through work with support groups or at workshops.

We can also offer more intensive support if needed. This can include helping with letters, attending meetings with you, or supporting you in discussions with the local authority, school, college or other settings.

When we are not able to help, we will do our best to explain why, or put you in touch with other groups or organisations that can help. We call this 'signposting'.
